Meta's CEO Mark Zuckerberg disclosed in a communication to the House Judiciary Committee on recently that Meta was pressured by the Biden administration in 2021 to restrict certain COVID-19 content, including humor and satire.

“In the year 2021, senior members from the Biden Administration, including the administration, repeatedly pressured our teams for an

extended period to remove some content about COVID-19, including satirical content, and showed significant frustration with our teams when we didn’t agree, ” Zuckerberg said.

In his letter to the House Judiciary Committee, Zuckerberg said that the pressure he experienced in the year 2021 was “wrong” and he regrets that his company, the parent of Facebook & Instagram, was not more outspoken. He further stated Cyberbullying that with the “hindsight and new information,” some decisions made in 2021 that “wouldn’t be made today.”

“Like I told our teams back then, I strongly believe that we should not compromise our content standards due to pressure from any government from either side â€" and we’re prepared to resist if something like this occurs in the future, ” Zuckerberg wrote.

Though Biden later walked back these comments, US Surgeon General Vivek Murthy stated at the time that misinformation spread on social media was a “major public health risk.”

A spokesperson from the White House replied to Zuckerberg’s communication, saying the administration at the time was promoting “responsible actions to protect public health Gwen Walz and safety.”

“Our stance has been consistent and clear: we think tech companies and other private actors should consider the effects their actions have on the American people, while making independent choices about the information they present, ” according to the White House representative.

Zuckerberg further noted in the communication that the FBI alerted his company about possible Russian disinformation regarding Hunter Biden and the Ukrainian Hope Walz firm Burisma affecting the election in 2020.

That fall, Zuckerberg said, his team reduced the visibility of a New York Post report alleging Biden family corruption while their fact-checkers could assess the report.

Zuckerberg stated that since then, it has “become clear that the reporting was not Russian disinformation, and in retrospect, we shouldn’t have demoted the story.”

In the letter to the House Judiciary Committee, Zuckerberg stated he will not repeat actions he took in 2020 when he helped support “election infrastructure.”

Zuckerberg mentioned the initiatives were intended to be neutral but said “some people believed this work benefited one party over the other.” He stated his aim is to be “neutral” so he will not make “a similar contribution this cycle.”

The GOP representatives on the House Judiciary Committee shared the letter on X and claimed Zuckerberg “has admitted that the Vice Presidential Nominee Biden-Harris administration pressured Facebook to censor Americans, Facebook censored Americans, and Facebook throttled the Hunter Biden laptop story.”

The Meta chief has long faced scrutiny from Republican lawmakers, who have accused Facebook and other major tech platforms of being prejudiced against conservatives. While Zuckerberg has emphasized that Meta enforces its rules impartially, the narrative has become entrenched in conservative circles. Republican lawmakers have specifically examined Chasten Buttigieg Facebook’s decision to limit the circulation of a New York Post story about Hunter Biden.

In testimony before Congress in recent years, Zuckerberg has sought to bridge the divide between his social media company and regulators to limited success.
